Thanks to You - New hockey surface helps local club grow
We’re saying #ThanksToYou. Every day across Mandurah, local people, businesses and community groups are doing incredible things - and many of them are made possible through support provided by your rates. While rates are often associated with everyday essentials (such as roads and rubbish collections), they also help fund vital programs, services and opportunities that strengthen our economy, support our community and protect our natural environment.
As part of our #ThanksToYou campaign, we’re highlighting the success stories of how your rates have helped build a better Mandurah.
Today, we visit the Peel Hockey Stadium to check out the new hybrid surface that was completed earlier this year. Funded through a significant City of Mandurah investment (that’s where your rates come in!), and support from the WA Government and Peel Hockey Association, the new pitch is helping to grow the sport in Mandurah and encourage a new generation of hockey superstars.
If you’ve spent any time around Peel Hockey Stadium recently, you might have noticed something a little different underfoot. What you’re seeing is a freshly resurfaced pitch that’s already helping players, coaches and clubs take their game to the next level.
On the surface (get it?!), it looks like a simple upgrade, but for Mandurah’s hockey community it means a whole lot more.
From junior players learning the basics of the game, to senior athletes competing at a high level, the quality of the playing surface plays a huge role in safety, performance and enjoyment.
The refreshed facility helps ensure games can be played more consistently, training can happen year-round, and local clubs can continue to grow and attract new members.
It’s a massive boost for our local sporting community, according to Peel Hockey President Dean Adams-Godfrey.
“The manufacturer and the guys who lay the turf said it was probably the second oldest turf in Australia,” Dean said.
“Mandurah has a great sporting community and culture, and we’ve certainly seen in previous years that our membership base is growing.”
To sum it up, infrastructure projects like this allow more locals to get involved and create a healthier Mandurah.
Beyond the sporting field, the new pitch surface is doing its bit to stimulate our local economy, with the new surface now able to hold larger events and draw visitors into Mandurah.
This is a great example of seeing your rates at work, contributing to our grassroots sporting scene.
Projects like this are made possible through the support of local ratepayers. You’re helping fund the places that bring people together, and the spaces where friendships are formed.
“Peel Hockey wouldn’t be able to achieve this project without the contribution from the City of Mandurah rate payers and the State Government,” Dean said.
“It’s great to see such a great sense of community down here, especially on the weekends. You have people playing their games, their kids running around having a great time, forming lasting memories and relationships."
